Comments: Burning through Napster's collection, free, Part 2

I'm currently trying this on Winamp 5.08d. I haven't even gotten to the point where I'm trying to convert Napster songs. I went to do a test run just to see how it would work and while mp3's are converted just fine, anything that was encoded into *.wma format (not protected) aren't saved to the hard-drive. Instead, the track plays back normally.

Ogg Vorbis and converting from *wav to *wav (although silly) also works. *.wma, however, won't. Has anyone seen this? Know how to get around this?

Posted by Matthew Reinbold at February 16, 2005 6:16 PM

Works!

Winamp:

Input - set to in_wm (WMA Plug-in)
Output - just like Marv said.
I am using the out_lame solution with out_stacker
It does create the proper ID3 v1, v2 Tags!
But the names of the mp3 files are messy so...

I also am using this mass file renaming tool to clean up the file names (remove .wma from the name, remove some other weird words Winamp sticks in like [Opening]). The tool is cool regardless.
Trial works, I might even pay for it cuz I like it so much.

Yeah you have to play the tracks back at normal speed...so that part of the conversion takes time. But you can run multiple instances of Winamp...as long as your PC can handle the load...

Posted by Jack at February 16, 2005 7:07 PM

The multiple instances of Winamp is a genious idea. Does anyone have any specs on how many instances they can run before their computer starts crapping out??

Posted by Matty at February 16, 2005 7:34 PM

How do you get Out-Lame to work? It isn't showing up in the OutPut on Winamo. Thanks

Posted by vince at February 16, 2005 9:29 PM

How does one open more than one instance of winamp?

Posted by Martin at February 16, 2005 9:58 PM

Is the loophole closed if Winamp won't play the protected wma? Installed XP updates and MediaPlayer10. I fear the loophole is closed on my computer.

Posted by K J at February 16, 2005 11:26 PM

Still chugging along on my comp. On my AMD64 3000+ (overclocked....) I can run 32 instances of winamp, and have them all outputting simultaneously. Egads.

(why yes, I am the originally quoted person who posted this at cdreaks)

Thanks for the props marv!

Posted by warlock1711 at February 17, 2005 1:26 AM

That's pretty cool. I actually discovered the "multiple instances" thing yesterday while dinking around with it. Thanks for the MP3 export though.

One question though. Does it maintain the ID3 tag from the original file? I want to keep the same album, track number, year, and genre without having to manually document it for every song and re-enter it later.

Posted by chiablo at February 17, 2005 9:09 AM

can someone email me output_staker.exe? it is no longer on winamp.com
thanks

Posted by jj6419 at February 17, 2005 10:31 AM

K J,

I was having the same problem, because I installed WMP 10 after I had installed Winamp. If you uninstall WMP10 (it's in the Windows Components section of add/remove programs), then uninstall Winamp, then re-install WMP10 FIRST, then Winamp SECOND, it should work fine. I did this late last night, so I know no "holes" have been plugged.

Posted by at February 17, 2005 1:16 PM

How do you run multiple instances of WinAmp? I have W2k and whenever I try to open another instance, it just goes to the current instance.

Posted by Hans Mast at February 17, 2005 2:03 PM

doesn't work for me. I just get a page that loads up:

Windows Media Update

In order to play this file, you need to upgrade your media player to a version compatible with Windows Media Rights Manager V7. Select View Compatible Players below to see a list of compatible media players.

what am I doing wrong?

Posted by asdfasd at February 17, 2005 2:51 PM

Tried the unintalling reinstalling thing, still no go. I fear autoXP-updates have filled the hole.

Posted by at February 17, 2005 3:08 PM

Hans, you need to enable it under "General Preferences" in Winamp's Options->Preferences.

Posted by at February 17, 2005 3:43 PM

marv: I think you'd find my post ( http://hansmast.com/index.php?title=marv_on_record_about_napster&more=1&c=1&tb=1&pb=1 ) interesting. Thanks for your reply on my question. Slashdot answered ( http://slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=139728&cid=11704121 ) too.

Anybody got a recommendation for LAME CBR re-encoding bitrate? I'm tempted to just use 320kbps to be sure I'm losing as little audio quality as possible during transcoding, but I'm thinking that's probably overkill considering the source files are only 192kbps...

Posted by at February 17, 2005 7:20 PM

has anyone figured out if this is possible with media player 10 intsalled???? WOuld it work in I just unintalled it???

Posted by damien at February 17, 2005 8:16 PM

damien-
Yes, it works with WMP 10 installed. You need it to play the files at all.

jj6419-
I uploaded a copy- see Part 1 for the link.

I've got this working and I've got it so down pat I think I could write a step by step with troubleshoot info...

Works fine using Winamp5.08d as has already been stated. I'm not running any crazy amd64, but my xp2000+ seems to cool with 6 running and a few other apps open, etc etc. Yet another reason to upgrade to amd64 and sata...

Using 192 bitrate, sounds great. Going to check out that earlier post about the renaming tool. Def must have. I love my free CD quality music.

IDEA: Competition. Who can grab and "take care of" the most? Have no idea how to set it up, but I expect to see plenty of boasting anyway...

I know of 12GB+ in only 2 days...

Posted by ulysses at February 17, 2005 8:45 PM

Hehe..
Well a competition would definitely be asking for trouble, but the real problem is that there would be no way to keep track of it other than people saying "I just got 12GB+ in only two days!" ;)

Posted by Marv at February 17, 2005 9:14 PM

So did this guy get paid by napster to get people to sign up for it by making it seem like this great deal? Oooooo 14 days!!! Yeah if no one noticed they want your credit card number and everything for the trial. Fuck this guy and fuck napster!!

Posted by truth at February 17, 2005 10:23 PM

It is a great deal, I have gotten sixty CD's for free.

I could do more, but I think I am satisfied for the moment.

Posted by T-Mart at February 17, 2005 10:39 PM

very true marv, very true...it would be difficult to measure...even if you had a "submission" process how could you know that everything being submitted is valid...but comeon, there needs to be more gloating :) that's all I'm sayin! Let's hear from the folks filling the 250gb sata!! It works people. It works. Marv pwns.

Posted by ulysses at February 17, 2005 11:00 PM

One of the earlier versions of WinAmp had a WAV_OUT plugin that would output to disk like has been mentioned here, but it could do a 4 minute track in under 60 seocnds.

Does this no longer exist?

Posted by Mirage at February 18, 2005 12:47 AM

I do not understand the draw for such things.

Are you really going to listen to 12G+ of music, ever, really?

Shit at that point you might as well just get XM radio.

I don't even like 800 songs, 12G+? I am laughing.

Posted by Someguy at February 18, 2005 12:52 AM

When I try and play the wma in Winamp i'm getting the message from windows media : In order to play this file, you need to upgrade your media player to a version compatible with Windows Media Rights Manager V7. Select View Compatible Players below to see a list of compatible media players.

If your current media player does not have a Windows Media Rights Manager V7 compatible version, you should select a different player with the Windows Media Rights Manager V7 identifier.

Any advice?

Posted by dave at February 18, 2005 1:32 AM

dave-
You need WMP 10.

Posted by Marv at February 18, 2005 3:08 AM

Winamp has removed the Output Stacker from its site.
Is there any other place we latecomers can get it?

Posted by Neal at February 18, 2005 5:22 AM

For those that haven't figured it out just yet, it's a simple four click process to allow Winamp to run more then one copy.

With Winamp open, click "Options", then "Preferences". The first window that shows up should be General Preferences (if not, then you have 5 clicks to deal with..lol). In that window, look for the checkbox titled "allow multiple instances" and check the box. Click close and *poof* you're good to go. You can how run as many copies of Winamp as your system can support.

Welcome to Musictown. Population: you.

even with wmp 10 i still get the message whenever i start a track in winamp. i'm going to reinstall winamp, the stacker and the settings. hopefully that will alleviate this problemo.

MY GOD THIS IS A BEAUTIFUL THING...I'VE ALREADY CONVERTED 300 SONGS...THANK YOU FOR THIS WORK AROUND....sorry for "yelling" but i'm very very happy rightn now.

For dave and others who are having trouble even playing the wma files or getting:

"If your current media player does not have a Windows Media Rights Manager V7 compatible version, you should select a different player with the Windows Media Rights Manager V7 identifier."

what you need to do is remove your current Windows Media Player [ Settings > Contol Pannels > Add Remove > Windows Components ] and winamp. Reinstall WMP first then Winamp. Took me a while and a bunch or restarts to figure out.

turn off Windows Automatic update, as both Microsoft and AOL is pushing security patches out to system to block this hack. I recommend blocking AOL and Winamp site on your firewall end as well. I think they're goin to force an update to winamp.

Another great tool after running your music through out_lame is Mp3tag.

Mp3tag lets you rename mp3's based on their ID3 tag.. Since the ID3 is preserved with out_lame, it will rename it properly in whichever format you prefer as well as build directories if you enjoy having your mp3's in order by something like:
Artist - Album - Track# Song

I'm still getting the "Rights V7" error. I'm using Win2k pro. So, I can't use Windows Media Player 10, just 9. But, I've uninstalled both winamp, and WMP9, and installed WMP first, and then Winamp. Yet, I'm still getting the error. Anyone have any idea's?

Are you using Napster To Go?

Off of Napster.com:

Note: Windows XP and Windows Media Player 10 are required to use the Napster To Go™ service.

What versions of Winamp and out-lame are people using? When I run out-lame on a DRM-protected wma file, winamp crashes on me. It works fine on a non-protected wma file. I'm using Winamp 5.08d, out-lame 1.6.2 on Win XP SP2. Any idea what's crashing winamp?

Posted by VTHokie at February 19, 2005 3:54 PM

If you're running Windows Server 2003, you can only pull this off by loading up Service Pack 1 RC2, because that's the only way WMP10 will install - the regular installer does a version check.

And twelve instances with no skin and no special options on a P4, 2.8 running Server 2003 with 1GB of PC2700.

Posted by at February 19, 2005 3:58 PM

Running Winamp v5.08d, Dietmar's Output Stacker v0.8, Lame MP3 Writer v1.6.3 on both WinXP SP2 & Win2003

Make sure that you've configured out_stacker.dll by adding:

out_ds.dll
out_lame.dll

You then have to double click out_lame.dll from within the out_stacker configuration and set the output directory that you want to output the encoded files to and point it to the Lame DLL (not sure if this is necessary).

Everything is working great for me but when I adjust the settings in Out_lame.dll, they don't save. Anyone else have this problem? Not really a big deal, since the quality of the recording is fine for my tastes, but I would like change the destination directory at least, which is defaulted at c:\.

Posted by Four King Good at February 23, 2005 9:44 AM

wrote a cygwin script to rename and sort the songs into "artist/album/..." folders before converting them to flac and accurately tagging. running 6 instances seems good, don't know if too many could corrupt and can't check every file. it works however and i can say that i have done at least 12gb and that is after flac. would be around 3x that but for flac.

Posted by sean at February 25, 2005 5:43 PM

I figured this out a while ago, and to further speed my productivity I reconfigured WinAmp's Track-naming scheme. Once I'm done ripping the .wma's to .wav's I use Magic File Renamer to strip off the leading playlist number, then use their token seperator and leading space remover to insert the correct ID3 information. My filenames come out of WinAmp as PlaylistNum_TrackNum - Artist - Album - SongName, so all the pertinant info is right there. I ran through something like 4000 songs in a couple days using this method and running 15 instances of WinAmp at once. Definately makes things much faster!

Posted by Yoder at February 26, 2005 11:50 AM

Is this still workable? I'm guessing that it's not.

I've tried finding older downloads of winamp and cannot.

With Virtuosa I get a message telling me the files are protected and cannot be converted.

And with winamp I can't get it to recognize the fact that I have an MP player.

If anyone found a method that still works I would greatly appreciate an email. I bought another mp3 player specifically for this project since my 60gb one is not compatible with Napster to Go.

Thanks in advance.

Ok, so my free trial ended and didn't get a chance to convert all my songs. So, I used my mom's card to get another free trial on my comp to finish them. But when it tries to acquire the license to play them it just gets an error and tells me to contact someone at mp3master or something like that. Anyone know how to fix this? I sure hope I don't have to download all the songs again.

HELP..I've read soooo many comments and suggestions re: converting protected napster files onto CD and I've gone so far as the downloading Winamp, following the instructions with output stacker etc, setting up a directory and playing the napster songs via winamp..so all good there! But then where are they? The output directory file I've created is empty - what am I doing wrong? I've got
"as each file is played, an unprotected wave file will be created in the output directory"
how does this happen?? I've got nothing!Listened to loads of music but still can;t get it onto a cd!
thanks loads to anyone who can help
