money for nothing and chicks for free

I went to Subway today because I won a free sandwich from their Scrabble giveaway. After I ordered my 6-inch Subway Melt and handed them the gamepiece, they charged me 38 cents sales tax. What the hell is that? I shouldn't have to pay tax when I didn't buy anything. I've won a million free food giveaways from restaurants and never had to pay sales tax before. I don't remember ever having to pay back when Chipotle was giving away burritos with ticket stubs from York Theatre.

Anytime I redeemed a "free" pop or something like that from white hen, I had to pony up some tax dough.

Maybe it's just cheap places that make you do that. Seems pretty ridiculous though. There's no sale, so why should there be sales tax?
