Inspired by jen and julia's blogs.... seems like a good idea.
Good things about Nashville
Mountains
Large State Parks right next to my apartment
Lower property values (compared to Chicago)
My job
My window at my job
Some tasty eats - Loveless Cafe, Logans Roadhouse
My college friends Ian, Mandy, and Seth that moved down here
Seth playing drums on my tunes
Ian playing bass on my tunes
Free parking most places
Fewer crowds
The Nashville Zoo. kristin and I are zoo geeks.
The Weather - mild winters = awesome.
No state income tax
Things I miss about Chicago
Cities that are aligned in grids.
Cities that are well-planned and have managed their growth better than certain *cough* other cities I know of...
Cities with cool museums and lots of green space downtown.
Other friends, social groups I've already fit myself into, a church where people knew me, a certain feeling of belonging or ownership of certain places.
Not being intimidated (as badly) by the musicians I'm surrounded with.
Drivers who are not absolute morons.
People who can drive in snow.
People who do not close the schools on "threat of snow"
People who do not cause a run on the downtown grocery store on the very same "threat"
Family - esp. when things got rough with the cars, I felt the downside to being "on my own."
Tong's Tiki Hut. Never found a place to replace it.
Portillos
A statewide sales tax that was NOT nearly 10%.
the "studio" in my basement where I could haul in a whole band to record if i wanted to.
---
Its pretty out here and I like it. feels good to summarize the good and bad about the new and old places, because then its not rattling around in your brain anymore... And maybe you can start being more "at home" in the new place.
hehe, interesting that there is not 3% income tax but the sales tax is 3% higher. But I guess you do live in a Red State. Hooray for placing the tax burden on the poor!
Posted by: mallio at October 3, 2007 2:10 PMyep - pretty ridiculous. there's some friggin ridiculous money in some parts around here too... the downside to living in "the south," even if just barely.

I think you are on crack my friend!
Posted by: Kristina at October 3, 2007 3:43 PMone of the interesting disparities about moving from one area/city to another that i've discovered is that the animals here are hostile to newcomers. just the other day, as i sat on my bench reading some levinas (and seriously what's wrong with reading some levinas) i was berated by a squirrel. for approximately 5.38 minutes, a common grey squirrel yelled at me and touched himself in various ways too inappropriate to describe. but when i lived in the woods that NEVER happened.
and what about the parthenon? how does that not get a mention. or chicago's chrome jelly bean?
Posted by: john at October 3, 2007 5:06 PMI know what you mean. Although I don't want to stay in Saint Louis, nor do I really want to move back to Hampton, there are things I prefer and miss (and would miss) about both.)
I'll have to think about it, and make my own list.
Anyway. I listened to all the songs of the week on my trip home on Thursday. Here's a top:
1. Hold On (I love this song, so, so, so much)
2. Every Time I Close My Eyes (This one too)
3. Human Nature and Love (And this one)
4. Worlds Unknown (Obviously this one)
5. Any Happier (Well, I recorded the fucking demo, geez)
6. Friend, If You Won't Listen (This one suprises me as to how much I like it. 'Cause I didn't much at first, it strikes me now. Could be a Conrad hidden gem)
7. Nostalgia (This one has a lot of potential, I hear it sounding like War on War, or like Bob Dylan from Highway 61 Revisited, or Bringing It All Back Home)
8. Sex and Gadgetry (I like your melody and control over enunciation. Besides, we need another pop/rock song for the album)
9. Two Things (although, it is too long. Need to trim the ending a bit)
10. The Right Thing (This song keeps making its way further and further down the list... Dunno.)
12. (tie) Drive
12. (tie) Not Yourself (These two songs seem intertwined, maybe you could do something cool to make them work together in production.)
12. Jealousy and Greed (This is a really good one too, so I'm not sure why it's so far down the list. I really like it.)
14. Losing Battle (I like this one too, but it's a little dragging, but the lyrics are really good.)
15. The Way Off the Ground (By far the most interesting song of the bunch, but also the most alien compared to everything else that would go on the album.)
All in all, I think you have enough material to really start production. So, mail me a dvd of sessions to start tracking already. Geez, what's taking so long.
well if chase is gonna do it then i guess i have to do it as well. i, too, have been listening to the demos with some frequency and this is what i think. in no particular order
hold on
worlds unknown
every time i close my eyes (i had an idea for this that would make it sound awesome)
any happier
sex and gadgetry
two things (excluding the life is a journey line)
not yourself
drive (has to be done...it's too good)
friend, if you won't listen
firestorm (i love the verse melody on this song and i think it would be great with some work)
that's all i can think of. but i agree with chase. and i also think that we should do stuff over new years since we're all gonna be around each other and that happens about once a year, unfortunately.
Posted by: John at October 4, 2007 8:26 AMi disagree with firestorm. except the line "a kind of cold war" i don't like that song. nor do i like the inflection your voice takes on the demo for chris, or the melody in the chorus...
ahh, to have producers blood pumping through my veins.
